Ranked as the best Africa safari destinations, East Africa receives more of the bulk of Africa’s tourists than any other part of Africa. There is more to East Africa safaris than what most people think- Kenya and Tanzania only. East Africa safaris will take you to Uganda, Rwanda and finally end your trip possibly in Burundi but at the end of the day, you are very exhausted and satisfied with what you see.
The East Africa Safari will also involve touring the Great Rift Valley, which has many geographical features including alkaline lakes, contrasting rift escarpments and forests. Sport Fishing is done in Lake Victoria with record breaking catches of the Nile Perch. Water rafting adventures are great on River Nile at Bujagali falls in Jinja Uganda and from Tana River in Kenya.
If your interest is game viewing, you will have a chance to visit all the game parks. There are so many National Parks and Game Reserves which can be visited many marking borders between countries and others tucked away in the remote areas. Uganda is famous for the gorilla tracking in Bwindi National Park which habitat extends further south into Rwanda in the Volcanoes National park another Africa Gorilla safaris area in East Africa. Deep within the forested countryside in Uganda and Rwanda are several species of primates such as monkeys, chimpanzees, bush baboons, colobus monkeys and the mangabeys.
The annual wildebeest migration is a major draw for East Africa’s tourists. More than 1 million wildebeests cross the Mara River from the southern Serengeti plains in Tanzania to Masai Mara Game reserve in Kenya. There is only one chance in a year to experience such a spectacle. Take a flight to East Africa in early June and you’ll surely not regret the expenses.

Catch the beauty of Ngorongoro Crater and its dense wildlife numbers within the largest unbroken caldera in the world.
Uganda has the best bird watching sites compared to Kenya and Tanzania. Kenya’s birds are the most fascinating. Lake Nakuru has several flocks of pink flamingos that camouflage the lake into a pink mass-Beautiful sight to catch through the lens. Enjoy sight of the Ostrich in Serengeti National Park and Samburu National park Kenya

If you are to define a typical African safari, one traveller or tourist will begin with adventures of game viewing from the comfort of an open roofed vehicle. This is however nit all Africa Safari holiday adventures comprise of.

Although game viewing vehicles cover larger area and more sights of African game, they too are perfect for taking pictures from a safer point of view. Putting that aside, think of African Walking safaris! How much more fun will you have on an African walking safari compared to the usual truck experience? On African walking safaris, you have the rare opportunity to experience the wilderness on foot, discover the smallest of the animals and insects living within this setting.

The unique adventure of a walking safari is a deeply spiritual journey that will forever change the way you view nature and how the ’true’ African safari should be. Walking safaris in African were actually the traditional way of going on African safari excursions before the arrival of trucks several centuries back dating to the time of the early missionaries and explorers. Tourists have all the glory of the African wilderness before them…smelling the earth, getting scratches of dry grasses (if you don’t dress in long outfits), experience the dust of the African land and so much more.

Walking Safari destination

South Luangwa National Park in Zambia is said to be the birthplace of the true African walking safari dating a couple of centuries back. In Luangwa Park, you’ll find herds of different animals near the riverbank and others on the shores of the ox-bow lagoons. Zambia safaris are not the same without a walking safari in the twin parks in the Luangwa valley. Its is a sheer luxury safari…not like that of a game drive, this one is a awww experience! Ever thought of walking to the high gorge on Victoria Falls in Zambia or Zimbabwe? There is no way you are going to get to view these magnificent water falls without laboring on the intense trek. Don’t worry, the sight on the water sheet falling on the gorge will soon make you forget how hard you have walked here

Trails in Kruger National Park of South Africa are famous for South African walking safaris. Many of the South Africa safari companies will be more than delighted to give you exclusive safari walks, explaining all sights on the trails and also tipping you on what to expect in the wild. For Botswana’s Okavango delta safaris, you’ll enjoy sights of the African elephant crossing the muddy flood plain, more than 200 different water birds not forgetting other small mammals

Coming on East African Safaris is another experience for adventure on walking safari. Behind the led of an armed ranger guide, push through the dry savannah of the famed Masai Mara Game reserve and spy on the sleeping lion prides, tree lounging leopards, small insects climbing an anthill and porcupines eating away some fresh fallen fruits. Arusha National Park and Serengeti National park will blow you away with amazing sights of different animals on the trails

Walking Safari Tips

Make sure to have the proper safari clothing that includes long sleeved shirts and trousers in light breathable fabric-Khaki is preferred, comfortable walking shoes, wide brimmed hat, sun glasses and sun screen.

Something you must not miss to take with you is a good camera (never carry a flash for a walking safari by day) with a good lens, long lasting batteries or memory card and any other extras as dictated by your safari guide.

An armed tour guide will always first brief you on what to expect and then lead you through the wilderness. Make sure you follow each and every instruction he gives you. This is very important because the ranger guides are typically experienced and knowledgeable about the conduct of African game like lions and other big five. You don’t have to be scared for your safety as these guides give tips on how to disguise your presences in the wild. You are in Safe hands! There is a world of difference between experiencing a safari in Africa on foot and the usual dramatic safari vehicles. All you have to do is Enjoy!

The annual wildebeest migration in East Africa takes place around the same time of the year with hundreds and hundreds of wildebeest, thompson Gazelles, zebras, Grant gazelles and other animals join the trail as Serengeti wildebeest move from the dry plains of Serengeti into the fresh green grasses of Masaai Mara Game reserve.

The annual animal movements entirely depend on the onset of dark rain clouds and start of rains each year. The animals move every month in search of the fresh pastures starting in January and then continues for another year.

January- Serengeti Wildebeest Migrations

Herds of Wildebeest and zebra normally gather in the southern Serengeti plains as the dark rain clouds cross to the slopes of Ngorongoro near the Ndutu Plains. The animals from the north arrive to feast on the fresh mineral rich pastures. The rains dedicate that the herds stay here for the calving season until the short grasses have dried up around late March or early in April.

Game viewing in southern Serengeti National Park Tanzania is good around this time as many animals congregate on the banks of River Grumenti and its water holes around the Moru Kopjes, Kusini and east on the Ngorongoro conservation area. Predators such as leopards, lions and hyenas will roam across the plains pursuing the herds on their Migration route. Only 4X4 trucks and vehicles are able to cross the plains as the ground in wet and muddy

April -May Migrations

The herds move into the western parts in the direction of the western Corridor (Seronera Area) of Serengeti. The area is dominated by long Fresh grasses that stretch far to Moru Kopjes and Simiyu. On sight are several male blue wildebeests fighting over territorial dominance as different animals start moving including Zebras and a few gazelles

June Wildebeest Migrations

For June more animals migrate into the Seronera area some moving further north but remain closer to the southern side of the Grumenti River on the Dutwa plains. If you are staying at Serengeti Serena Lodge or in Grumenti River camp, you’ll have the opportunity to see these herds right from your window or verandah.

The Grumenti River is dry for this season forming a few water pools that attract animals only to find dangerous crocodiles that feast on the hesitant animals. Animals start crossing the dry river in this month. June is fantastic with Serengeti migrations; sizable herds move far north into the Lobo and Loliondo area and other blue wildebeest have resorted to the northern parts beyond Liliondo in north central Serengeti. However most of the animals stay in central Serengeti.

July-August-September

The wildebeest migration continues on for July as herds move northwards spreading across the plains around the Musabi and Simiti in search for fresh green pastures while the water in Grumenti river is almost done. The herds than amass near the Mara river banks grunting their way past the slow flowing water.

This time of the year is transitional with several frail animals dying from the thirst and exhaustion before the reach the Mara River. The young calves also die as the search for water to drink. As many die, predators are thankful that they have something to feast on for the day-lions, hyenas, crocodiles and cheetahs share the spoils of the drying migrants.

Over 2 million animals have now crossed over into the Masai Mara Game Reserve grazing and feeding on the fresh short pastures. August is highlighted with light showers in northern Serengeti thus stopping a few herds from crossing over into the Mara reserve. The scene on the Mara River is compared of a grunting sea of life moving into another world!

Wildebeest migration in Masai Mara begins in after the animals have crossed the Mara and thus spread cross the Mara greedily feasting on new pastures, moving further north of the reserve

October to December

The rains return to South and eastern Serengeti region, filling up the dry Grumenti river and yet pulling the herds from all parts of Masai Mara to the borders of Mara. The Mara pastures are then getting dry thus herds begin the Great Migrations yet again, this time back to the Serengeti in Tanzania.

Slowly, small herds begin migrating back to Serengeti until the end of the year. December is rainy month and thus short grass shoots appear in other parts of the Serengeti, as animals increase, and calving season begins all over again!

Novices or beginners are generally accompanied by their trainers and can be rest assured that they are in safe hands.
Canoeing and boat rides are another way to enjoy the vast waters of Africa lakes. Many of the lakes have beautiful scenery besides being home to several species of birds and animals like buffalos, crocodiles and schools of hippos. East Africa’s crater lakes like Naivasha, Nakuru, Magadi and others are often camouflaged with pink flamingos, pelicans and a host of other birds. Lake Kariba in Zambia is famous for Houseboating besides canoeing and boat rides. With the right equipment and gear, you can rest assured that your entire trip will be truly adventurous and fantastic too.

The sensational African walking safari began thousands of years back as missionaries and explorers trekked through deep, thick bush forest jungles, grasslands and traversed high tide rivers. The walking safaris experience continues on to date, this time safer, managed and more thrilling than before!
A carefully guided walking safari tour to the extensive African wilderness is one of the best and exciting ways to discover Africa, closely and more intimately. While planning your walking safari in Africa, look forward to visiting south and East Africa for the best experiences. There are several tour and travel operators that can help you not only to choose the perfect destination but also make itineraries for the walking safaris to suit each tourist’s needs and preferences.

African Trekking Safari

Walking safaris in southern Africa include more than wildlife watching. Popular sights include different varieties of birds, unique plants and crossing scenic geographical features. The walking trail experience allows guests to get their feet on the ground and really feel, smell and touch the ground. Under close guidance and lead of an armed ranger, visit famous trails from the game rich Kruger National Park, rest assured of sights like lions, antelopes, elephants, giraffes, leopards and the endangered black and white rhino among others. Okavango Delta in Botswana has splendid trails crossed by large herds of elephants. Night trails are dominated by nocturnal predator sights like jackals, hyenas, cheetah and sounds of insects.
Zambia’s vast game parks, particularly North Luangwa and South Luangwa Park are pioneer destinations for walking safaris in Zambia. South Luangwa stands out with its unique woodlands, spectacular valley cliffs, water fall, Mwaleshi River and animals like wildebeest, impala, zebras, Thornicroft giraffe and over 200 species of birds. This park hosted the very first walking safari in Zambia and Africa, back in 1967.
East African walking safaris are ranked among the most interesting, besides the most insightful/rewarding in the world. Start your magical experience in Kenya’s Masaai Mara National Park, set in unspoilt beauty and hosting several wild animals that cross the savannah. Sights here include giraffes feeding in acacia woodlands, lion prides resting on rock outcrops, leopards, zebras, buffalos, hyenas and more. The dry season is preferably good for walking safaris in the Mara, especially early in the morning as animals and birds flock the banks of Mara River to quench their morning thirst.
Other attractions famous with walking safaris include Lake Naivasha, Baringo and Nakuru; popular with several flocks of pink flamingos, good for bird watching. In Loita hills and Chyulu hills from northern Kenya, fewer animals will cross your path but you’ll enjoy the spectacular rift valley cliffs, dry river beds, and unique woodland species like giant lobelia, Lianas, giant nettles and heath. Parrots, crowned eagles, colobus monkeys, antelopes, hyenas, camels and elephants are some of the wildlife seen on your walking safaris. Visit the shores of Lake Victoria for more exciting birding experiences and the famous Serengeti National Park from Tanzania, a renowned habitat for several prides of lions among other predators.

Safari tips and Guidelines

To make the best of your walking safari, book and plan with a trusted tour and travel company before you arrive. It helps to secure backup 4WD vehicles or animals like Carmel that will carry necessary camp gear and luggage.
Most game parks and reserves are in accessible by vehicles or with poor road networks and a few tracks that are mostly impassable during the rains. Participants in a walking safari should be in good health and be reasonably fit and active. There is no simple path as such and some parts of the walk lead through hilly and rocky areas and sometimes last several hours. The morning and late afternoon are preferred times for walking safaris and more rewarding during the dry seasons.
Remember to carry light clothing, a wide brimmed hat, sun glasses and a pair of binoculars for each trip, not forgetting a camera to capture the moment. Respect and follow all instructions from your game/ tour guide on a walking safari as they look forward to keeping you safe and free from any dangerous situations.
All walking safari itineraries range from hours to more than one day and will require that you take accommodation near the attractions or desired destinations. Some walking safaris packages offer luxury lodges and bush camps situated in remote areas of national parks. Although an open vehicle safari covers more distance and sights, a safari on foot is more engaging with close interaction with the wilderness and adrenaline rushes down your body once you encounter game on the trails.

Zambia’s vast game parks, particularly North and South Luangwa are pioneer destinations for walking safaris in Zambia.
East African walking safaris are ranked among the most interesting, besides rewarding in the world.
African Trekking Safari

When talking about Gorilla safaris and gorilla trekking, there’s no better place that explains this African safari than the deep forested slopes of south western Uganda and forest jungles of bordering Rwanda and DR Congo mountains. Your heart starts racing on the sight of the gentle giants, one of the world’s most endangered primate species. The 3 countries host only a small population (about 60%) of some 800 mountain gorillas that are surviving across the world.

Gorilla trekking in Uganda

Uganda safaris are not complete without a visit to the famous south western hills and mountains also called the ‘Switzerland of Africa’, the home of the giant apes. Tracking and trekking for gorillas is done in Bwindi Impenetrable forest and Mgahinga National Park. The world’s largest primates live in the densely forested slopes of Mgahinga volcano in families of 5-8 members, with 5 families found in Uganda alone! The forests are almost impassable and will require your guide to often cut through overhanging vines and plants to make trails for the guests. One finding the family of silverback or black gorillas, anxiety and excitement catch you. Stare in the eyes of the giant yet gentle and vulnerable apes and take their pictures, the interaction is limited to only 1 hour. Some of them are habituated and will show you some interesting habits! Besides the gorillas, you will find the rare golden monkeys, several amphibians, birds, chameleons and more interesting sights.
Arrange a gorilla trekking safari through one of the travel and tour operators and have yourself a memorable experience tracking the primates. The Uganda gorilla safaris itinerary normally includes visits to other primate habitats, for example Kibaale National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park and a series of forests like Maramagambo and Budongo. Here you’ll find several chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, red tailed monkeys, olive baboons, grey cheeked mangabeys and other apes. A gorilla and chimpanzee tracking permit is a must have for any tourist looking forward to gorilla and chimpanzee tracking, purchased from UWA offices around the park or in Kampala.

Rwanda gorilla safaris and trekking

The gorilla tracking experience in Rwanda is exceptional with approximately 400 gorillas in both Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans) on the Uganda border and Nyungwe Park in south western Rwanda. Renowned as the land of a thousand hills, Rwanda has over 6 gorilla families in Volcanoes Park alone with spectacular views of the volcanic peaks of Gahinga, Muhabura, Karisimbi, Mikeno, Sabyinyo, and Visoke from the tourist town of Musanze.
Despite its recent political turmoil and gorilla poaching, Rwanda gorilla safaris are remarkably increasing and only done if you have a gorilla trekking permit form ORTPN (Rwanda tourism offices). The tracking experience normally flags off mid- morning hours, extending into the later part of the afternoon. It sometimes takes a strenuous 2- 4 hours of intense tracking before you can come across a silver back family feeding before it embarks on the next trail. It is advisable to take packed lunch and a camera to film this amazing, once in a lifetime experience. There is still plenty of time to also go tracking on golden monkeys, a rare primate species endemic to the Albertine Rift.

While in volcanoes park, Rwanda, visit the grave of the famous naturalist and researcher, Diane Fossey who dedicated her life to saving and putting across the plight of the mountain gorillas to the international acknowledgment. She was later murdered in 1987 by unknown poachers/ people and was buried at the heart of her works and efforts, near Karisoke research centre. More international researchers and scientists have since participated in more research; conservation efforts and awareness has increased across the world.
From the Congo (DRC), there are some considerably big gorilla families in Djomba as well as Bukima but the country in set in deep political instability besides the intense poaching habits of the Batwa people that live in and near these rain forests.
Gorilla trekking is often done in groups of 8 persons under careful guidance and lead of trained and armed ranger guides. The rainy seasons often make gorilla safaris and trekking more strenuous and longer with muddy, impassable trails. Make sure you have the right gear, clothing and attitude (physical fitness) because these trails often lead you up the high mountains to heights of close to 4000m above sea level.

If you ever come on an African wildlife safari and you never see the famous African lions, then you seriously need to redo your safari itinerary. The lion is the King of the Jungle in Africa and has reigned in colonies called prides in the southern Sahara and in wild savannahs in East and Southern Africa. The beastly creatures are nocturnal predator and play a major role in maintaining wildlife eco-systems throughout their habitats.

Many other small predator and birds like vultures take the spoils of killings done by the fearsome Lions. Lions have sharp claws and teeth, strong for limbs and strong sight which they used positively to advance towards their prey even when 10km away.

They are magnificent animals and have already been the subject of some television documentaries but looking at them on Television is not enough if you want to know these animals better. To really enjoy your visit they are facts and details you require acknowledging about African lions. The African lions habits the open thick savannah grasslands specked with few woods, rocky outcrops and trees from where they love to lounge in the mid-day heat.

Lions are the only cats that live in groups, also called prides. Just about all prides consist of three males, approximately a dozen females, and the cubs. Male cubs drop the pride if they may be older, building their very own prides or becoming a member in one other. Male African lions are distinguished with the locks of hair all-around their head, and also the lionesses would be the hunters of your pride. They may be ready to topple creatures significantly larger than themselves considering that they hunt in groups.

Lion safaris in Africa

The lion prides in east Africa are the most famous and are particularly screened in many documentaries. Kenya loin safaris are a good start with trips to Samburu game reserve and the famous Masaai Mara game park. East Africa is renowned for large migrations of lion prides thank to the migrations of other animals like wildebeest, hartebeest, zebras, and antelopes from which they get their daily prey. Visit Kenya in July during the time of the annual migration of wildebeest and you’ll savor prides of them on the banks of river Mara as they impatiently wait to devour the weak and hesitant prey crossing the river.

Serengeti national park is famous for large prides of lions of up to 16 members. Tanzania lion safaris are good in the wildlife crammed crater park of Ngorongoro from where they can prey on the many mammals in the park. Lions are sighted in the Kilimanjaro national park at the foot hills of Africa’s rooftop mountain. Check out Lake Manyara National park for its mystical tree climbing lions that can also be found in Queen Elizabeth National Park on a Uganda Lion safari tour. Lions are mainly nocturnal and are reputed to rest for about 20 hours a day in thick undergrowth, in a shady tree or near shades of rocky outcrops.

The rare white lions of Kruger National park, South Africa are something ghostly in the African wild. These lions are not common and are bred in South Africa with specifications for local inhibitors and are mostly reared in zoos.

African Lion safari tips

African lion safaris are not only pleasurable, they are also educative but you have to strictly follow safety precautions of your lead game ranger. The rangers have been with the animals for year and surely know their behavior, how they act in the presence of humans and where they live. An African lion safaris led by expert game ranger are secure, provided you pay attention to the rules and guidelines that you are given.

Lion safari game drives are the most interesting ways to sight lions; you’ll find many lion families in a short time. Carry you pair of binoculars and camera on the game drive for easy sighting fro a far. Do not stand up in any car or even make abrupt movements as this may irritate the lions and in defense, they’ll charge to attack. Walking out of your car is suicidal, stop if you meet the lions at close range and proceed driving slowly

You can even find these lions on the park’s track and routes resting in the roads. Understand that these lions have been born here in the wilderness or just near t by and may be familiar with the vehicles on an African lion safari game drive. The smell of petrol and exhaust fumes conceal the human odor, so feel safe the lion does not look at your vehicle being a carrier for their next meal!

In case of are on lion safaris by foot, do exactly as your guide says to avoid attacks and don’t make noisy that will provoke the lions to attack. African lion safaris offer you a genuine view in the lion’s habitat and ways in which they get by. Before considering booking a vacancy at a lion safari camp, very carefully examine African lion safari review articles to decide on the places and packages suitable for you.

Africa safari are often highlighted with sighs of several African game, both five and small. To some people if you are describing an African wildlife Safari, they will loosely translate it into Big Five Safaris or hunting of the big five animals

What are the big five animals?

Thinking…the big five game found in the African wild are probably the hardest animals one can hunt on foot or follow on animal spoors for several miles. The big five animals are dangerous too and should be tracked cautiously.

The big five animals consist of Lion, the African elephant, leopard, Cape buffalo and the rhinoceros. Meeting all big 5 in one parks is not easy but you will meet them all in Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya, Botswana and Zimbabwe.

The African elephant is almost seen in every wildlife park in Africa, except in the Sahara. The large elephant, some called forest elephant and others bush elephants are almost hairless, with long trunks, with long curved Ivory tusks and have fan shaped ears.

The rhinos are steadily growing to be an endangered species especially with the black and white rhinos. The Cape buffalo or called African buffalo are also a regular sighting in the savannah grasslands. The leopard is a large spotted predator often found in the savannah and forested areas. Within sight is the Lion, a popular animal on Africa wildlife safaris.

Lion safaris are often a favorite for tourists to Serengeti Park in Tanzania, Kruger park in South Africa, some tree climbing species found in Lake Manyara Park in Tanzania and from Queen Elizabeth National park in Uganda. The males have black mane on their heads living in prides of up to 20 members.

The best time to visit Africa on Big Five safari and enjoy game viewing, is all year around. Each time you decide to visit, you will see these animals. The dry season are a plus for predators form the big 5 (leopard and lion) as they stalk on the various prey that visit the different water points. Night Game drives are good for the predator hunt often finding them feeding on an unfortunate prey animal like antelopes

Big 5 safari tips

As you prepare your Big five African safari, pack the right safari clothes. Clothes that will give all the comfort you need as you explore the park. Examples of safari clothes include jeans, vests, Khaki, shirts, jackets, hats, shoes and boots. Avoid bright colors; you may be easily identified by the animals. Take natural colors such as khaki and other colors that blend well with the environment. A safari jacket with many side packets will help you carry small items such as cameras, binoculars and many others.

To get the most adventure of safari, plan for a game drive, this will give the opportunity to see large concentrations of hippos, crocodiles and other animals. Early morning is the best time for seeing the animals and because of the heat; they are usually resting in the afternoon or are only discovered at the shores of the lake.
