Luanda is the largest city in Angola and also it’s the capital city. This former Portuguese capital is located on the Atlantic Ocean coast in north eastern Angola thus making it an important sea port for this diverse country.

History

Luanda was first discovered by the early Portuguese explorer Paulo de Novais in 1576 thus naming it as Paulo da Assumpcao de Loanda. At the time, Luanda became home to several settlers, dutch explorers, Europeans and other travelers

In 1618, this town was turned into an important fortress with a series of other smaller forts. The most famous of the forts built by the Portuguese is Fort Sao Miguel which is jealously preserved as an important tourist attraction in Luanda today.

Luanda in 1627 was under the Dutch rule and soon than later, it became an important slave trade market for Brazil and other destinations in America until the late 1850s.  The town also became important for trade and export of Portuguese products like wax, oil, timber, ivory, cotton, cocoa, coffer, peanut, Maize, dried meat, cassava flour and other commodities.

Luanda achieved its independence from the Portuguese in 1975 and has since grown into Angola’s administrative town

Tourist Attractions

There are museums and several monuments in Luanda and among the most visited museums are National Anthropology Museum located 1 mile from the city centre and National Slavery museum that acts as a monument for Angola’s slave trade history.

Mussulo Bay is found in the south western area of Luanda near the sea. The bay is separated from the sea by just 30km long sand spit. Massulo Bay is a large protected area that is popular for excellent birding trips in Luanda. There are an estimated 300 birds in this area with more than 20% of them endemic to the area. Cameia National Park

Cameia National Park is found in the Moxico province of western Angola. This Park is named after the provincial municipality of Cameia in which it is found.

The park occupies an estimated 1445sq km and was established in 1938 as a game reserve. Later in 1957, Cameia was proclaimed a national park.  The park’s eco-system is defined by the different rivers that cross and border the park. The Zambezi River marks the northern boundary of the park pouring its waters in Chifumage river  on the southern border while to the east are the Luena River and Lumege rivers.

Lago Cameia and Lago Dilolo are part of the water catchment system in the park. Lago Dilolo is remarkably recognized as the largest lake in Angola

Vegetation: the park is largely filled with miombo woodland in the Zambezi river basin in the west while the lake shores are filled with extensive reed beds and waterlogged grassland swamps. The park receives an estimated 1145mm of rainfall annually making it one of the highest rainfall belts in Angola.

Location

The park is easily accessible via  Cameia-Luacano road which also forms the northern boundary to the park. The Park gate is at Lumeje, just a few metres off the Cameia-Luacano road.

Wildlife

The park’s wildlife population has dwindled through the years but the most sighted game included wildebeests, tsessebe, Lechwe antelopes and the reedbuck. Other animals that once lived in the park include the lion, leopard, cheetan and warthog.

The park is at 110m above sea level with several rivers and lakes that attract a number of water birds and woodland species.  The park is recorded to have at least 29 water birds and these include the Angola lark, Anchieta barbet, Angoal barbler, black tailed cisticola, Rufous bellied tit, Brown firefinch nad the Kurrichane thrush among many others.

Cameia National park is another of Angola’s National park that was drastically affected by the civil war besides the adverse effects of illegal poaching and human activity in the park.

 

Cangandala National Park

Cangandala Park is ranked as the smallest national park in Angola covering only 600sq km.  It is drained by the Cuije River on the northern boundary and Cuaza river tributaries in the east and west. It was first recognized as a game reserve in 1963 but gained national park status in June 1970. It is sometimes referred to as Malange National Park.

Vegetation

Since the park receives nearly 1350mm of rainfall per year, there is an easy distribution of vegetation. A large area of the park is covered by woodlands of mainly Brachystegia and Julbernardia while other forest species found in the park include the Dombeya, Burkea and Monotes among many others. On the edge of the rivers are scattered patches of grasslands, forest woodlands and papyrus swamps

Location

This Angola National Park is found in Malanje Province in north central Angola. It is bordered by two towns Techongolola and Culamagia in the south and east respectively.

Wildlife

The park was formed to protect the numbers of Giant Sable antelopes that roamed the area in the early 1960s.  Today, there isn’t any factual statistics about the remaining numbers of these antelopes in Malange Park

Luando Nature Reserve

This special Angola reserve is located in Malanje province occupying an estimated 828sq km. It was named a nature reserve in April 1938 and later in 1995, it was accorded status as a special Angola Reserve.

Luando River, from which the park gets its name, is found on the northern border of the park while Luasso and Cuanza rivers are found on the south and western boundaries respectively.

The park’s vegetation is dominated by the Brachystegia and Julbernardia woodlands, grasslands and papyrus swamps to the banks of the rivers. Some areas are covered in termitaria thickets and open savannah grasslands.. The area receives average rainfall of 1350mm per annum

Wildlife

The park is an integrated bird area with an estimated 264 bird species. There are four bird species of Guinea-Congo forest biome found in the park. Luando and Cuanza river banks attract more than 35 water birds. Some of the notable species in the park include wattle craned, Guinea Turaco, Dickson’s Kestrel, pale billed hornbill, racket tailed roller, Souza shrike, Rufous bellied tit, black backed barbet, Anchieta Barbet, Agola lark, Kurrichane thrush and the black necked Eremomela among many others

Some of the mammals found in the park include the leopard and the giant sable antelope among many others. Luando nature reserve is one of the Angola National parks and reserves that was gazetted to protect the endemic Giant sable antelopes.

Namibe Integral Nature Reserve

Namibe Special Nature reserve is found in the Namibe desert of Angola near the coast to the Atlantic Ocean.  The special reserve was opened to the public in June 1957 and covers an estimated 4, 450 square kilometers.

The reserve is largely dominated by the desert sand dunes, rugged hills and mountain peaks and plains that extend to the sea coast. The are a receives and estimated 50mm of rainfall per year and an average temperature of 26ºC

Wildlife

There are several species of wildlife in Namibe special reserve include ostrich, elephants, mountain zebra, black rhino, meercat, wildebeest, eland, sable, lechwe, buffalo, tsessebe, guelenge and impala among many others. Some of the birds in the park include the pelican, flamingos and many others

Attractions in Namibe desert

This Angola National park is also referred to as Quissama National park and is one of the most popular National parks that Angola has.

Kissama Angola park was first recognized as a game reserve in 1938 and later in January 1957, it became a fully recognized national park. The park covers nearly 9,960 square kilometers making it ine of the largest national parks in Angola

Location

Vegetation

Iona National Park is one of the parks and reserves from the block of protected areas on the Atlantic Ocean coast. This continuous block stretches from the Namibian border parks of Namib-Naukluft National Park and the Skeleton coast National Park both making sections of the vast Namib Desert.

Iona Angola Park was gazetted as in 19376 as a national park previously considered as only was a nature reserve.  It is spread over an area of 5, 840sq km ranking as the largest national park in Angola. There are several areas that make up the entire park with reserves and protected areas such as the Cunene river banks and delta, Baia dosTigres and more than 200km of the ocean coast.

In the east Posto do Iona defines the skyline at 800m above sea level and Tchamalinde Mountains as well. These and more features make the bio-diverse eco-system of Iona Park. The desert and semi-desert regions are basically made up of grasslands, mopane woodlands, patches of savannah, desert dunes and the calcrete plains.

The park receives an estimated 100-300mm of rainfall every year which nourishes the grasslands for every season.

Location

Iona National Park is located south west of the city of Namibe-200km from Nimbe town. The western border of the park is on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean while the south is noted by the meandering waters of the Cunene river. In the north, Curoca River forms a lush park border.

Formerly game reserve (since 1938), Bicuar National park was gazetted as an Angola national park in December 1964 thus occupies an incredible 790,000 hectares. The park has several species of plants but the most occurring are bushveld, water logged savannah on the river delta and banks, shrub thickets, open miombo bushveld and savanna

Since the Spanish government funds conservation efforts for this Angola parks and many others, there are programs on wildlife conservation such as electric fencing, rehabilitation, construction of trails and reforestation among others

Location

Bicuar National Park lies in the southern Hulla province. This Angola National park is bordered by the Cunene River in the east marking an important eco-system in this area of the park. It covers to the North a road that starts in Mulola Lumenha passing through Mulola Chipula, on the South, Chibemba road of Gambos-Mulundo, Cunene river until West Onguenha and a part north of Chimbolelo, Ongolola-Cuoco until Mulondo-Chibemba

Mupa National Park

Mupa National Park is one of Angola’s parks that were gazetted in December 1964. This park is found in Cunene Province and is sometimes referred to as the Cunene River National park.

It covers an estimated 660,000 hectares bordered to the north by Colui river and the famous Cunene river occupies much of the western boundary. Much of the park is under low-lying hills and river valleys filled with large shrub thickets, miombo bushveld and savannah on the river banks. A mosaic of the deciduous Xeriense savannah and bushveld are significant.

Wildlife

The park was previously set apart to protect the Giraffes Giraffa camelopardalis angolensis a species that survived in the park by the 1974. Other animals that lived in the park include the wild dog, spotted hyena, lion and leopard among others. Surviving mammals in the park include bats.The decline in wildlife population in the park is attributed to increased human settlement in the park, civil war, nomadic livestock herding and mineral discoveries.

Some of the birds in the park include the Miombo tit parus, Wren-warbler, pale billed hornbill. Wattle crane, short tailed glossy starling and the chestnut-backed sparrow among many others.
