Shaba National Reserve is another Kenya wildlife park and reserve found on the northern Kenya safari circuit together with Buffalo springs reserve and Samburu National reserve forming one great conservation area that allows animals to roam freely in the three habitats.

Game Viewing

Shaba is however he smallest of the three parks and covers 220 km² on the slopes of a small volcanic mountain range Mt Shaba (1525m) to the east. The game reserve was made famous by Joy Adamson who tamed a lioness here called Elsa as highlighted in the film called Born Free Country. He also had great love for leopards thus starting conservation efforts in this area.

There are 4 springs that nourish the park streaming from Ewaso N’giro river attract several game and birds within the park. Regular sights within the park include cheetah, gravy zebras, giraffes, gerenuks, buffalos, oryx, elephants, lions, grant gazelles, dik-dik, waterbuck, gerenuk, Somali ostrich, lesser Kudu and more than 300 birds.

Getting there

The park is 314km from Nairobi, talking about 5 hours driving on a murram road north of Nairobi. There is an airstrip in Buffalo Springs Park that services charter flights into this area, taking only 45 minutes from Nairobi. You can visit the park any time of the year!

Accommodation is available from Sarova Shaba Lodge with more than 80 fully furnished rooms with fitted bathrooms, swimming pool, private Jacuzzi, decked platforms for animal viewing along the river, restaurant, Bar and completely secluded atmosphere that will relax you from the hectic Kenya safari game drive in the park.
