Sibiloi National Park, Kenya

Sibiloi Kenya National park is another of Kenya’s National park that has been overlooked by the international media yet is as serene as an untouched wild paradise. The park is found in the semi desert northern Kenya region some 800km from the capital, Nairobi. Alternatively travel by road from Nairobi to Kalokol on the lake’s western shores, via Kitale and Lodwar. From Kalokol boat hire services are available across the lake to Allia Bay.

Although the area is predominantly dry, the park lies in dry sand rivers, commiphora woodlands, sandstone outcrops and with historic archaeological sites altogether making up for the 1,570sq km of the entire park . The National Park is administered under Kenya Wildlife Service and is listed on the UNESCO World heritage sites

Sights and attractions

Mount Sibiloi stands at 1,700m above sea level dominating the skies of the Kenya safari park. Other sights within the park include Lake Turkana on the north eastern border, being the source of life in the dry-semi arid park.

Animals within the park include hippos, crocodiles, zebras, giraffes, lion, oryx, gerenuk, leopards and other animals. More than 300 different birds are found within the park including flamingos, pelicans, ducks and other water birds.

The Koobi Fora Museum and Koobi Fora Spit with the facilities of the Koobi Fora research Center are to the north of Sibiloi National reserve, but are accessible through guided tours. Other attractions are the preserved wildlife fossils which include the Giant Tortoise and the 18-20 ft long Crocodile.

Accommodation

There are 2 Kenya safari lodges within the park-Oasis Lodge and Lobolo tented camp. Self catering options are available form Allia Bay Guesthouse with 3 rooms, solar power, furnished dining and kitchen. There is a camp at the National museum of Kenya Koobi For a and Sunset strip camp.
