Top Tips for Game Viewing in Africa

0
Game Viewing in Masai Mara

Many visitors to Africa look to big five game viewing as the main thing to do on their holiday. However for every instance, there surely must be some guidelines to further enhance your excitement.

Therefore to enhance your excitement of the African safari experience or simply to make the most out of any activity, there are some things you should know well in advance. At African Safaris Guide we have prepared several tips that will let ensure an Africa safari like nothing else. Here they are:

1. The early bird, as the saying goes, catches the worms. This adage seem to apply even for African safari vacations. Even if it implies that you wake up earlier than the rising of the sun, you would be happy that you did since many activities occur during the morning than throughout the day. This is for the reason that most animals are active in the earlier parts of the day and spend the whole light hours sleeping or resting. Nocturnal animals, on the other hand, are only about to rest while the sun rises.

2. The safaris, though more famous for the games and wild animals, were not created solely to do just that. You might be busy collecting stones while discarding wonders such as sightings of intriguing insects, varieties of smaller animals and multitudes of panoramic sights.

3. One of the more indispensable equipment in any African safari vacation is the binoculars as they allow you to see visions even from afar. Though travel companies normally provide binoculars, you might as well bring your own sets as you may prove them more convenient than risking your chance of sharing the tool with another person.

4. Your exposure to mosquitoes in African safaris can cause you myriad of mosquito diseases which in most cases, deprive you from more enjoyable experiences. To ward off uninvited guests during the night, make it a point to apply mosquito repellants and expose parts of your body as little as possible.

5. Any self-respecting African safari vacation operators knows that guests are susceptible to certain ailments due the natural elements in wild Africa. Therefore, they are well-equipped with treatments, medications and procedures that will create lesser chances of being affected by one. However, you must still bring with you personal medications such as anti-diarrhea medicine and anti-malaria pills in case you might need them.

6. You surely would want to reserve memories of experiences that you have undergone during your African safari vacation. If you were to bring a camera, your best bet would be the digital ones. However, for types that make use of films, be careful that you have some good reserve of batteries and films.

7. If you want sights of the nocturnal animals, your obvious choice would be to travel at night. Be wary though that you don’t get to hold the lights primarily because they can attract many insects that becomes irritating overtime.

Cheap Africa Flights

Whether it’s for business or pleasure, the cost of airfare can really add up. Many travelers are constantly searching for discount airfare prices before they take to the sky. The best way to find a bargain is to plan your trip on a budget. This will allow you to get the most out of your trip and save some extra pocket money see the sights or afford other travel expenses upon arriving at your destination.

Most travelers are turning toward the world wide web for all of their discount airfare. Early booking discounts, special internet-only rates and instant confirmation numbers/receipts are among the many benefits of booking flights online. Scheduling a flight with discount airfare does not mean that you are skimping on the quality, but rather that you are saving money to spend elsewhere.

As a general rule, travelers who are searching for discount airfare pricing should consider avoiding weekend travel. Because the weekend is the most popular time to travel, most airfare rates are significantly higher during this time. If planned through the week, the cost of a flight can end up saving you hundreds of dollars than if that same flight were booked to include a weekend. The same is true of holiday weekends, in which cases the airlines are not only swamped with travelers but also discount airfare is a rare find.

If at all possible, travelers should book their flights early. In most cases, the earlier travelers receive the lowest possible rates and the best possible selection of seats (i.e., window, aisle, etc.). It may be more difficult to schedule the desired seating or route within a week of your trip so, where planning is concerned, the early bird really does get the worm.

Travelers who plan to book their discount airfare online may find themselves at the helm of various internet-only rates and other website promotions. Certain routes, for example, may be more affordable than others. One of the most important things to keep in mind, when shopping for discount airfare, is that some ticket purchases are not refundable. For this reason, it is best to read the airline’s refund policy carefully and understand what it means for your trip. Some airlines will allow ticket exchanges, but no refunds. Others will allow no alterations to travel plans, depending on the discount airfare agreement.

When shopping online, it is always best to use a credit card to secure instant purchases and receive instant confirmation of your discount airfare price. But, most importantly – shop around for the best deal.

Going on Safari in DR Congo

Congo Mountain Gorilla

The Democratic Republic of Congo is another home to Mountain Gorillas in Africa. The country has both Lowland and Mountain Gorillas. Gorilla trekking safaris in Congo are becoming popular worldwide! The country is safe and open to all International visitors. The critically endangered mountain gorillas are found in Virunga National Park accessed from Kisoro town in south western Uganda. Kisoro town (Nearby town to the Boarder) is 2-3 hour drive from Kigali in Rwanda, and 6-8 hours from Kampala (Uganda’s Capital).

While on your tracking journey, be sure to hike further into the impenetrable jungles to watch the gorilla families in the wild. The guides and parks rangers will lead you for they can without doubt determine the common area where these gorilla families will be. These are experts in tracking and they keep records of the gorillas for purposes of conservation and protection from poachers.

At the break of day, a drive to Bukima- a warden’s post in the elevation of the Virunga National Park which is a gorilla tracking starting point slightly out of the Goma City will mark the beginning your gorilla tracking quest. Along the way be certain to see natives from the small agrarian villages waving tirelessly at any signs of modernization that they may see. This will most likely give you a glance at the different ways of life nearby.

The length of the trek is wholly dependent on the gorillas which hardly follow a clear path. You will get to understand that they wander a lot and that these itinerant gorillas voyage the jungle in families, only staying in an area long enough to clear it of food. Guides will sometimes be able to track them down in less than two hours but during other times it might take much longer.

Your first sighting might be that of mother apes holding their babies or the juvenile gorillas getting playful or even better the dominant silver backs keeping an eye out for their family! The guides are sure to do more explaining on their range of behaviours.

Mountain gorillas are very social, highly intelligent and great animals to observe and they live in families, the Mountain gorilla also known as the Gorilla beringei beringei exists in two population where by one population of these gorillas is found in the three parks that lie in the Virunga Volcanoes, such as the Virunga national park in the east of DR Congo, Volcanoes national park in North western Rwanda and the Mgahinga national park in south western Uganda, and another population is found in Bwindi Impenetrable National park in the South West of Uganda.

Having a gorilla trekking safari in DR Congo is something one wouldn’t want to miss in a lifetime, watching the Gorillas in the Virunga National Park. The fact that these primates live in families, each family requires a leader where by each family group is headed by a dominant silver back, there are also female gorillas that are in charge of care taking especially to the young gorillas, also there is nothing as amazing as watching the playful juvenile gorillas in the trees. Trekking starts at Bukima Patrol post, so all trekkers are supposed to be there early enough to go through the briefing and also meet their guides.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is still not yet so much explored by various people and if one is adventures this is the way to go since it doesn’t provide the mountain gorillas only, but there is also an opportunity of hiking the Nyiragongo Mountain. So the time to take the safari is now!

Planning a Budget Gorilla Tour in Africa

Mountain Gorilla

Mountain gorillas are critically endangered, which makes the life-changing experience of visiting them in their natural habitat even more extraordinary and precious. There are said to be less than 900 African mountain gorillas left in the wild, although exact estimates vary – 700 (National Geographic) and 880 (World Wildlife Fund). The rare opportunity to see a family of gorillas in pristine rain forests is not only one of the ultimate wildlife experiences in Africa, it is also a once-in-a-lifetime expedition that sadly may not be possible in the future.

The main countries offering gorilla trekking tours in Africa are Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) – all three in central Africa. The natural environment of these mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) is dense rain forest, and more specifically the moist tropical and subtropical forests of the Albertine Rift in central Africa.

Southern Uganda hosts 13 gorilla groups in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, one of which is found in the area designated as Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The groups inhabiting the southern part of Uganda, in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, are:  Rushegura, Mubare and Habinyanja – three families in the Buhoma area.  Nkuringo family – one group in the Nkuringo area. Butukura, Oruzogo and Kyaguriro – three families in the Ruhija area.  Mishaya, Nshongi, Kahungye, Busingye and Bweza – five families in the Rushaga area

Mgahinga National Park hosts one family group of gorillas, called Nyakagezi. In the past the Nyakagezi group moved between Rwanda and Uganda, but for the last two years these gorillas have been staying put in Uganda. The family group consists of ten gorillas, including four silver back males.

Just over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas (about 480 according to WWF) are found in the broader Virunga Conservation Area (Virunga Mountains), which includes the well-managed Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. This is where the legendary and iconic gorillas conservationist, Dian Fossey, lived and worked with gorillas. The gorillas here are more habituated than in other areas, meaning that they are more accustomed to having humans around. There are seven gorilla families that can be visited in Volcanoes National Park.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Mountain gorillas are found in the Virunga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in eastern DRC this national park borders on Uganda and Rwanda. Virunga – Heather Thorkelson the 7800 km² Virunga National Park is home to about 200 of gorillas (National Geographic), living mostly in the southern areas of the park. The national park is managed by the Congolese National Park Authorities, together with the Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN) and its partner the Africa Conservation Fund. After a decline in numbers about seven years ago, due to brutal attacks in which at least 10 gorillas were killed, the gorilla population has recovered somewhat. The population is more stable now, largely thanks to the brave efforts of rangers risking their lives in Virunga National Park.

Comparing Gorilla Trekking in Uganda Vs Rwanda

0

Gorilla trekking is a unique experience that creates memories that will not be forgotten easily. Uganda and Rwanda are the leading countries for a life changing gorilla trekking safari. Gorilla trekking is conducted from Volcanoes National Park for Rwanda and Bwindi National Park and Mgahinga National park for Uganda. There are about 880 mountain gorillas remaining in the world and 400 of them are in Bwindi National Park while the rest (about 480) live in the Virunga Complex (Uganda’s Mgahinga National Park, DRC’s Virunga National Park and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park).

All these destinations are beautiful and good for gorilla trekking safaris, unrivalled wildlife experiences in Africa. However, tourists who have never visited any of the two countries or have visited only one of the two countries are often left contemplating on which of the two countries provides a more memorable gorilla trekking safari? There is no specific answer to that question, reason being that the answer varies from one person to another and every country offers unique gorilla trekking experience that differs from the other. But we shall not leave the question hanging; there are some differences that exist between gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda. These are based on the cost of gorilla permits, ease of access to the National Parks, difference in tracking conditions or the difficulty of hiking, cost of lodging facilities, Other activates tourists can engage in on top of gorilla trekking and the number of habituated gorilla groups tourists can visit. This write up will provide you with the differences of gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda but the end of the day the choice of which country to choose from lies in your hand.

The comparison of gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda has been based on;

Number of gorilla groups that that be tracked

There are 12 habituated gorilla groups that can be tracked from Uganda where 11 of them can be tracked from Bwindi National Park and only one (the Nyakagyezi group) can be tracked from Mgahinga National Park. Volcanoes National Park on the other hand is a home to only 10 habituated gorilla groups that can be visited for your remarkable gorilla trekking Safaris.

Cost of gorilla permits

In terms of cost of gorilla permits, Uganda is the winner because a gorilla permit costs $600 for foreign non-residents, $500 for foreign residents and Shs 250,000 for the East African Residents. The best news about this, is that Uganda also offers discounts on gorilla permits during the low seasons (April, May and November) where foreign residents pay $450, foreign residents pay $400 per person and East African Citizens pay Shs 150,000 per person. Rwanda on the other hand charges an exorbitant price of $1500 per person for all tourists (foreign residents, foreign non residents and Rwandan Citizens alike) at all seasons. This price only caters for the luxury tourists neglecting the budget tourists. Even the Rwandans are left out hence discouraging domestic tourism. This $1500 for a Rwandan permit can do a lot of things in Uganda. First of all instead of paying $1500 to watch mountain gorillas for one hour, why not pay the same amount to stay with the gorillas for whole four hours? Alternatively, that $1500 for gorilla permit in Rwanda can book an entire 3 day gorilla trekking safari in Uganda in  low season-by the way even in the high season. If I was asked where I would go for my gorilla trekking safari based on this comparison, my answer would definitely be Uganda.

Tracking conditions/difficulty in hiking.

Tracking the mountain gorillas is generally difficult across all the National parks, but some people will tell you that the experience of gorilla trekking in Rwanda is a bit easier than trekking in Bwindi Fotrest National park. This is a total myth. Gorilla tracking is about luck, where you may expect it to be easier for you during tracking but it turns out to be the opposite. Just track the gorillas expecting a tough hike than expecting an easier one then you end up disappointed.

Ease of access

Volcanoes National Park is located just 2-3 hours away from Kigali Airport/City. If you are in a hurry and would like to track these mountain gorillas and go back home immediately, then I recommend you do it from Rwanda. A 1 day gorilla trekking safari in Uganda is totally impossible. You will need minimum of 3 days for gorilla trekking in Uganda, hence someone in a hurry cannot be able to track gorillas from this country. If the cost of gorilla permit is not a problem, then I greatly recommend Rwanda for your next gorilla trekking Safari. Why would you spend an entire day travelling to a Park yet you can drive from the Airport to a Park for only two hours, track and even go back home. Not only that, there are better road conditions from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park than it is from Kampala to Bwindi national park. The winner here is Rwanda.

Local communities around the National Parks

It is a common phenomenon for local communities to surround protected areas. So Volcanoes, Mgahinga and Bwindi national parks are not exceptional. The interesting difference is that with Bwindi and Mgahinga there are more fascinating communities with interesting activities, for example who wouldn’t want to participate in the Batwa trail? When you visit Bwindi or Mgahinga National Parks, you will get the opportunity to visit the Batwa and they will take you through their lives in the forest, you will visit Ngarama Cave where their former King used to live and experience as they make fire from sticks among other interesting activities.

Besides gorilla tracking, several tourist activities exist at the disposal of tourists in Uganda than they are for tourists in Rwanda.

In conclusion, the choice of what country for gorilla trekking depends on the desires of the individual tourists but certain perimeters like cost of gorilla permit, ease of access to the National Parks, and the tracking conditions are considered by tourists in their desire to choose where to track gorillas from.

Travel to Uganda & Rwanda for Gorilla Safaris

Planning for combined gorilla safaris in Uganda and Rwanda are an incredible way of exploring South West Uganda and North East Rwanda. There is only one thing better that Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Uganda and that is mountain gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda! Combining both countries will give you an incredible gorilla trekking experience but also a unique insight into this part of East Africa. You will encounter many differences as well as similarities in the people and culture that will leave you with a deeper understanding of the region.

The majestic mountains, rolling hills and lush grassy lowlands of Rwanda create a beautiful wild and untamed piece of Africa. Nicknamed ‘Pays des Mille Collines’, meaning ‘Country of a Thousand Hills’ in French, this tiny landlocked country dwarfed by its neighbours is brimming with colossal landscapes and striking scenery. Rwanda holidays are famous for taking you to the home of mountain gorillas, an incredible wildlife moment filled with both adventure and tranquillity. However Rwanda has so much more to offer its visitors.

After the horrendous and unforgettable events of 1994, Rwanda has prospered into a calm, hopeful and charming country eager to welcome and host guests. Travel to the north of the country and to the home of half of the world’s wild gorilla population, Parc National des Volcans. Be prepared to trek up to altitudes of 3,000km and for five hours a day through thick vegetation, mud and regular rain showers. But encountering a troop, watching these rare, captivating gentle giants in the peaceful atmosphere of the jungle is a truly outstanding reward for your hard work. By no means a spontaneous or bargain holiday, with permits costing $1500 and selling out months in advance, it’s all worth it when face-to-face with the gorillas building their nest for a midday rest, collecting fruit and cuddling their young.

A gorilla trek within the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a highlight of all visits done in Uganda and certainly mountain gorillas are the major reason as to why very many people visit Uganda.  On the other hand, Uganda is recognized as a very safe and more so secure country in which you can see these gorillas in serene surroundings. Every gorilla permit goes for US$ 600 while in April, May and November 2017 they will go for US $ 450. On a single day, nearly 80 people travel into Bwindi to see gorillas and only 8 people are allowed to see a gorilla family.
