    What is the Best Activity to Undertake?

    What is the right activity for me financially? For many tourists, their choices narrow down to the amount of money it takes and there is a difference in price between the two activities. The permits for gorilla trekking in Uganda are at $600. On the other hand, gorilla habituation costs USD 1500 per perosn. This means that gorilla trekking is cheaper by US$900 than gorilla habituation. The permit for the gorilla habituation is at $1500 per person. The difference $900 for many is worth it since you have more time with the gentle giants of the forests.

    Over 60% of the tourists choose Habituation over trekking because of the extras one receives while with the gorillas on the habituation Experience. The same rules also apply to gorilla habituation however distance from the gorillas is in the rules but is mostly violated by gorillas and not humans.

    A normal gorilla trek is 3 hours and depending on the group that you are to track while gorilla habituation experience is longer. You are with the gorillas for 4 hours plus the time it takes to hike in and out to where the group is located that day. The location of any group depends up to 1 kilometre a day and the pre trackers are out at the crack of dawn of finding the location of the group you will be with on that day.

    1 hour with the mountain gorillas is a worthwhile experience, while 4 hours with the family of gorillas is an ultimate dream. Those who love taking up close pictures of the gentle giants of the forest prefer the experience of habituation.

    The Normal trek takes 8 participants on the activity while the habituation Experience trek takes only 4 participants, this means that the experience is going to be exclusive for you. You will also learn more about the gorillas, their ways, and habits, daily routines from the researchers and trackers that will join you on your trek. Not only are there very few participants, there are also few porters, staff, support staff, which gives you more time to focus on what you came for. There have been many words of thanks from participants in the Habituation experience that is only offered in Uganda. It’s not offered in Rwanda or DRC. It’s a very unique activity offered in Uganda.

  • Chimpanzee Tracking Experience in Uganda Vs Rwanda

    Chimpanzees are one of the unique primate species that are found in Rwanda and Uganda. However, these primates live in the shadows of the mountains gorillas that make them not to receive the attention they deserve. These primates are the closer relatives to human kind than the mountain gorillas. The Chimpanzees are 98.7% related to mankind yet the mountain gorillas share about 98.2% of their DNA with humans? So, among these two primate species, which ones are closely related to humans? But as the saying, some animals are equal but others are more equal, and some are born lucky. But it would be interesting when you take your time to visit these Unique Chimpanzees on your safari in Uganda or Rwanda.

    Most times, tourists get confused on where to go for chimpanzee trekking between Uganda and Rwanda. All the two countries can be visited for gorilla trekking, but are slightly different in some aspects. This article provides you with information on the difference between chimpanzee tracking in Uganda and Rwanda.

    Most forests in Uganda have the chimpanzees and the exceptional areas with habituated chimpanzee groups include Kibale Forest National Park (the Primate Capital of the world with 1,500 chimpanzees out of the 5000 chimpanzees in Uganda). Budongo Forest within the Murchison falls National Park in North Uganda, Kalinzu forest, Semliki-Toro Forest Reserve and the Kyambura gorge in the Queen Elizabeth National Park.     Besides chimpanzee tracking, Uganda offers a more interesting opportunity for tourists to spend up to 4 hours with these riveting primates during the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (dubbed as CHEX) in Kibale Forest National Park and Budongo Forest. This activity usually takes a full day because tourists together with researchers have to observe these primates from the time they wake up in the wee hours of the morning, time they feed, mate and nest in the evening. However, the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience doesn’t take place in Rwanda’s Nyungwe Forest National Park.

    The price of the Chimpanzee tracking permits in Uganda depend on the place where you are tracking from, with chimpanzee tracking permits for Kibale forest National park being $150 per person, permits for chimpanzee tracking in Budongo forest are at $80, permits for Kyambura gorge at at $50 and chimpanzee tracking permits for Kalinzu Forest cost $30 per person. For UWEC, you just pay entrance fees (Shs 20,000) and get the opportunity to see most of the animals including the chimpanzees. Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe forest National Park costs $100 per person.

    Because national parks in Rwanda are nearer to each other and not far from Kigali city, is easier to participate in gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park on that same day transfer for chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe forest National Park which is not p0ossible in Uganda because the Parks are far from each other, hence will need another day to transfer from Kibale national park to Bwindi national Park.

    The roads leading to Nyungwe forest are smooth and it is about 3 hours drive from Kigali to Nyungwe Forest, while for Uganda, most of the roads are in poor condition and it takes long (at least 4-6 hours) to reach the places that the chimpanzees are tracked from. With Nyungwe Forest National park, there are luxury but few accommodation facilities and the lodging options are also very distant from the Chimpanzee trekking trailhead. For Uganda, there are many lodging options for chimpanzee trekking and range from Low budget to luxury options. These faculties are also not far from the trailheads.

    In conclusion, based on the comparison between Chimpanzee tracking in Uganda and Rwanda, you can choose which destination to choose from based on your desires, budget of the safari or time you have to have a memorable chimpanzee tracking experience.

  • Go Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Africa’s Rain Forests

    Of the most popular wildlife viewing experiences in the world, encountering the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat in Uganda and Rwanda is the best adventure i have ever experienced!

    Though i took my first gorilla safari in Rwanda in 2010, the memories of observing the mountain gorillas in their natural wild is still fresh within my head. A gorilla trek is great way to meet our distant, hairy relatives who share with us 99% of our DNA. When I first took a glance at the endangered mountain gorillas I felt like i was in a strange land! I took their photos in awe and i cant exactly tell the feeling of watching these amazing creatures! I cant imagine standing a mere feet from these powerful animals, the strongest of the ape family. What is surprising is the mountain gorillas are very calm, peaceful and care less about your existence as long as you don’t threaten them.

    Where to See the Mountain Gorillas

    Did you know that there are only a few mountain gorillas in the wild? There are about 880 individuals living in three countries in the world; Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Unlike the lowland gorillas, there is no mountain gorilla in captivity! I think this is one of the reasons as to why gorilla trekking is an amazing wildlife experience that top the list of the best adventures you can ever take in the wild.

    There are four parks where one can see the mountain gorillas;

    • Volcanoes National Park in Northern Rwanda. This is the most accessible of all gorilla parks. It is located within a distance of just 3 hours drive from the Kanombe Airport, Kigali.
    • Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga National Park in South Western Uganda. Bwindi is the favorite for most hikers given that it hosts almost half of the world’s remaining population of the endangered gorillas. The park has 14 habituated opportunities thus it is easier to get the gorilla permits, an essential requirement to see the gorillas.
    • Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Located in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, this is the oldest national park in Africa. Established by the Belgian colonialists the Virunga is the most famous of Africa’s parks.

    Gorilla Trekking Experience

    If you have ever visited the gorillas in the zoo, a gorilla safari in Africa is totally a different experience. You will watch the gorillas in the natural wild and there are no glasses, no bars, no rumbling safari car engine, no squinting through binoculars but you will be just a meters away facing the giants face to face!     Anyone intending to take a gorilla trekking safari in Africa should consider planning early enough on a trip! There are several tour operators and travel agents who offer fully inclusive trips to the gorillas. For those planning to travel independently, you will need to arrange booking your gorilla permits in time as well as booking your transportation and accommodation. Please note that public transportation is not available in some rural areas.

    Please remember that gorilla trekking requires more active participation than traditional safaris and there fore a considerable degree of fitness is required for hikers.

  • Go Gorilla Trekking in the Virungas

    I remember when I was about 13; I came across an article about the incredible rare mountain gorillas of central and East Africa. This is something that obviously stuck in my little brain, because when I was thinking about exploring more of Africa in my vacation year, I finally decided to go gorilla tracking and meet these amazing rare great Apes.

    My tracking day started as early as 6:00am local time with a hearty breakfast because by 7:00am sharp- with packed lunch I needed to be at the HQ of the Parc National des Volcans in Ruhengeri for briefing. The Volcanoes National Park is the place where Dian Fossey worked and the setting for the famous film Gorillas in the Mist). After getting allocated to the different gorilla groups, we were separated into ten groups of eight trekkers each.

    Each trekking group was assigned a guide and a gorilla group to trek, and led into the thick forest. The mountain I climbed formed the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda and Uganda, and we were told the gorilla group had been spotted at 3000m. We started hiking through the jungle that contain the mud, the mist and this gave us quite an interesting experience.

    Later on, about three hours, we found ourselves over 9,000m above sea level, sweaty, out of breath and having been scratched to pieces by the vegetation, put your bags down, “our guide told us quietly” get out your cameras and be very quiet – a gorilla had been spotted! Looking up the steep slope, we could see the dark shape of a juvenile in a tree.

    Getting closer, our guide started making ‘soothing gorilla noises’ (or grunting loudly)! I was thrilled to see the dominant male and leader of the group, the Silverback, appeared to take exception to our presence, and started pounding his chest and roaring. Good enough we had been told to stand our ground- that he would do this to intimidate us, just to prove he was bigger and owned the territory, I wasn’t arguing with him — and then shortly he settle down.

    Shortly after he had relaxed, a female emerged from the nearby bush behind us, and walked back to the group, brushing past the backs of our legs. Among the rules of the park authorities is that visitors may get no closer than seven meters to the gorillas – which brush past my trouser leg will stay in my mind as one of the most amazing experiences of my life and proud to be part of this Rwanda gorilla tour into the Volcanoes National Park (PNV).

    Then we enjoyed the next hour passed far too quickly – taking pictures (no flash, it apparently aggravates the animals) and just watching the children play in the tree branches. However they look intelligent, they care for their young, always pull them back whenever go too far or too close to spectators and I feel incredibly privileged to have spent that hour with these amazing Africa’s gentle giants. Standing before them makes forget all the hassles encountered on your way up the mountain. Wow gorilla safaris are exceptional.

    Facts about the Rwandan Mountain Gorillas; A few travel tips about the experience:

    The gorillas live in a mountainous, volcanic region called the Virunga, straddling the borders of Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

    The Virunga gorillas have suffered a combination of habitat loss, illegal poaching, disease and civil unrest, bringing the population close to the brink of extinction in the 1970s and 1980s, but conservation is slowly having a positive effect.

    There are now thought to be around 800 gorillas living in the wild, compared to about 550 just a few years ago, with as much as half of the world’s remaining population living in the Virunga Mountains.

    The area is remote, and it took days to get there from other tourist areas in Uganda.

    The trekking permits aren’t cheap, setting you back about US$750 including the cost of trekking in the Parc National des Volcans in Rwanda. Mgahinga National Park and Bwindi National Park in Uganda charge about US$600.

    This price pays for your guide, entrance to the park, and allows you to spend one hour with a gorilla group. It is a lot of money, but most of it is spent on directly conserving the gorilla population and in educating the local people in the importance of conservation in the fragile mountain forest ecosystems of the area.

    In Rwanda, there are 13 groups of gorillas, but only 10 are used to tourists, so book early.
